??It's gardening season, and BWSC is ready to share essential garden tips!??Did you know that rain can wash excess chemicals into our waterways? By using companion plants, you can boost your garden's health while reducing pesticide use! ?? For example, pairing geraniums with roses attracts pests away from those delicate blooms. French marigolds act as a natural pesticide for most flowers, while yarrow enhances soil quality and makes great mulch! ?? Pro tip: Group water-intensive plants together and consider native New England varieties for reduced water needs. Mulch also helps conserve moisture! ??Want to calculate your watering needs? ???? Did you know that Moon Island has been a cornerstone of Boston's wastewater treatment since the late 19th century? ?? Let’s dive into its rich history: ??1875: A study led to the construction of the Boston Main Drainage System (BMDS), which intercepted local sewers and carried waste to Moon Island in Boston Harbor. ?? 1877-1884: The BMDS was built, featuring 25 miles of intercepting sewers, a pumping station, and an outfall pipe at Moon Island. ?? 1889: The Metropolitan Sewerage System was formed to address growing needs, pioneering a district-wide approach to wastewater management. ??Fast-forward to today, and the Boston Water and Sewer Commission's (BWSC) Nut Island and Deer Island facilities work in tandem to treat wastewater and protect the water quality of Boston Harbor. ??Moon Island's legacy showcases the importance of innovative wastewater management in preserving our environment. ????
